Skiing and superyachts - the ultimate skiing destinations for superyacht charters
Crewed adventure private yacht charters deliver the ultimate in high-octane vacations, particularly when cruising in areas known for their destination ski slopes. Yachts that are equipped with the facilities and amenities for harsher climates provide the cosiest of settings in which to dine, sleep, relax and plan your adventure.
And when paired ice-breaking hulls and a helipad – or two – on deck, plus heated ski rooms for equipment storage and drying, snowmobiles for transporting guests, ice-condition tenders and a sauna in which to warm up in at the end of the day, no ski adventure is off limits.
Montenegro
The Balkan country of Montenegro is known for its stunning Bay of Kotor, fjord-like beauty and world class superyacht marina in Porto Montenegro. But soaring above the area’s limestone peaks and glacial lakes exists some of the best undiscovered ski slopes around.
Younger guests and novice skiers will enjoy the gentle slopes found at Kolasin 1450, while more advanced boarder and skiers should head for Savin Kuk found within the National Park Durmitor. For something altogether more memorable, the soaring peak of Hajla mountain reopened in 2017 after 13 years of closure and brings altitude action to a skiing yacht charter.
Alaska
Cruising the majestic coastline of North America delivers shimmering glaciers and tree-lined beaches but take to the skies by helicopter and you’ll gain a new perspective on Alaska’s Chugach Mountains. Here, heli-skiing is the order of the day. Carve your tracks into the virgin slopes.
Rest for a picnic lunch atop a glacier. And breathe in the stunning vistas that overlook the sheltered waterways below. A day spent skiing these wildlife-rich slopes will build your stamina and dreams for years to come.
The Alps
The Alps are the highest mountain range in Europe, stretching across seven Alpine countries, from France, Switzerland, Italy and Liechtenstein to Austria, Germany and Slovenia. The Alps are one of the most popular of all winter sports destinations, with Alp’s skiing topping the bill.
In fact, even in summer, the possibility to ski a high altitude glacier that enjoys year-round snowfall is for the taking when a helicopter is at your disposal. Switzerland’s Klein Matterhorn is considered one of the best, while Austria’s Hintertux is well-suited to all ranges. When in France, Tignes provides the country’s highest ski resort, and some of the Alps’ best food.
Norway
There’s more to Norway than shooting geysers and dramatic fjords. The Lyngen alps have an entirely unique proposition to daring enthusiasts, who fancy tackling first snowfalls under the glow of the Northern Lights. By April, the glare of the Midnight Sun reflects brightly day and night, and the skiing conditions are optimum.
Drop anchor in Lyngen or Nord-Troms, plan your activities in the warmth of the saloon, before setting off early morning to the mountain top to snow board, freeride on fat skis or catch air every time you descend.
Canada
Canada retains its reputation as the leading heli-skiing hub, and Bella Coola in British Columbia is the place to go for those keen on kinder conditions and decent snow dumps. When on the hunt for extreme experiences, the less hospitable destination of Baffin Island in the Canadian High Arctic delivers.
It offers some of the world’s longest couloirs and highest vertical cliff faces and is not for the faint-hearted. It also requires an ice-class yacht with all the technical equipment to experience the slopes in comfort.
The perfect skiing superyachts
While most superyachts can circumnavigate the globe, it takes a certain type of explorer to deliver a heli-skiing charter of a lifetime. While the extreme cold of the outdoors can’t be managed, the levels of comfort and service found on board are second to none. Cosy steam rooms and dry storage lockers ensure guests are kept warm, while long range yachts with commercially certified helipads and ice-classed hulls guarantee their safety.
PLANET NINE
After a thrilling day of adrenaline-pumping action on the slopes, what better yacht on which to recentre than one named PLANET NINE. With her 73.2m ice-classed hull, fully certified helipad and 6,000nm range, you can explore the most remote slopes in the world, ones never skied before. Ease away the muscle strain of the day with the yacht’s masseuse and steam room. Add to that a sun deck jacuzzi, beach club, sea-level gym with terrace and cinema, and you have the perfect heliskiing package.
SERENGETI
Frequently sighted cruising the wild wilderness of Canada and Alaska, 39.6m SERENGETI is a yacht well-versed in providing wildlife watching charters teamed with heli-skiing remote peaks. If the jacuzzi on the flybridge doesn’t suffice, the thermal hot springs in the region will add some warmth to the spectacular icy setting. Serviced by crew who are highly experienced in adventure charters, it’s a perfect partner to high-octane winter pursuits.
