The Bahamas - MUCHOS MAS captain interview.
Published 15 June 2020
Captain Troy Dougherty of the 43.9m MUCHOS MAS tells us where to find turtles, stingrays and sleeping nurse sharks in The Bahamas.
How long have you been a captain?
Since May 2015.
What inspired you to become a captain?
Working for a couple of great captains early in my yachting career showed me that the captain has the ability to create an enjoyable working environment that adds to the experience of working in this great industry.
Why did you choose to work on MUCHOS MAS?
To take on a yacht build allows a captain the opportunity to gain an unparalleled knowledge of the vessel and have input that betters the end result. Coupled with the fact that MUCHOS MAS has an amazing ownership family, it was an easy decision to join the MUCHOS MAS programme.
What makes MUCHOS MAS a great Bahamas charter boat?
Where do I start! MUCHOS MAS has a shallow enough draft to get in close to all the best anchorages, we have a well equipped 33ft Intrepid tender, which is ideal for cruising through the islands or getting guests out to experience some sport fishing. We have an assortment of toys and arguably the best sun deck on any vessel under 50m, which is ideal for a fun BBQ, relaxing in the custom jacuzzi or simply stretching out on a sun lounger soaking in some of the wonderful Bahamian weather.
What is your personal favourite feature of the yacht and why?
While the interior of MUCHOS MAS is beautiful and filled with all the modern amenities, I believe the exterior decks of MUCHOS MAS are her highlight. The sun deck is second to none and for a change of pace, the foredeck guest area is the perfect place to get away from the crowd and enjoy some quiet time with an uninterrupted view of the beaches and anchorages.
How much experience do you have cruising The Bahamas?
I have been cruising here for over 10 years.
What is your favourite activity to create for guests on board MUCHOS MAS in the Bahamas?
Who could go past a private beach set-up on an isolated sandy cay? Lunch on the beach with your toes in the water!
What is your personal favourite spot in The Bahamas and why?
I have a couple. One is a sandy spit that is 80 percent covered at high tide and is almost always deserted, and the second is an island that has a great tidal estuary system, great for spotting turtles, stingrays and the occasional sleeping nurse shark or two. The estuary is a great place to kayak or paddleboard too.
Do you know any secret fishing spots in The Bahamas?
I have done plenty of fishing in The Bahamas and while there are few 'secret' spots left these days, there are plenty of great fishing spots where you can get hooked up. For those wishing to really up their fishing game, we are more than happy to bring along a local guide for the best local knowledge.
One piece of advice for what to pack for a Bahamas charter?
As little as possible! Relaxed beach attire is acceptable everywhere in The Bahamas. Sunscreen is provided on board but bring your favourite hat and one outfit for the casino should you wish to visit Atlantis for one night.
What do you think surprises guests the most about The Bahamas?
The remoteness of some of the anchorages, and how relaxed the atmosphere is in the islands.
What advice would you give to a first-time charterer?
Relax and leave everything to us! Communication prior to your arrival is key but once you step off the plane, the crew on MUCHOS MAS are here to make sure you enjoy your vacation to the fullest.
What do you hope to bring to the MUCHOS MAS experience?
Flexibility and a fun environment. It’s your vacation and I am here to assist in every way possible to make sure it is an experience to remember.
Do you have any special traditions on board?
We have been known to play games with guests who are willing to participate, similar to the game Cluedo, that can sometimes last the entire charter.
What, in your opinion, makes MUCHOS MAS’s crew so unique?
The ease with which the crew-guest relationship develops. Our crew are eager to engage with the guests at their level and are as comfortable with formal service as they are with a barefoot beach BBQ.
One line on something that nobody knows about MUCHOS MAS?
Our two jacuzzis are named Sun and Moon, but not for the reasons you would think…
